Ecological school gardens at nine village schools in Puri district

In October 2017, the partner Aashraya (Bhubaneswar) of Mandelzweig-Projekthilfe e.V. started the construction of nine ecological school gardens in the district of Puri. Thanks to funding from the Schöck Family Foundation (Baden-Baden), this follow-up program was made possible.

The ecological school gardens are designed as educational gardens. The students are trained to become multipliers of organic farming. Natural diversity is the focus of the program, which also brings "old plants" back onto the menu. The aim is to reduce the use of pesticides on the fields in the project area and at the same time to develop a balanced diet and food security. The school gardens also serve as refreshments for the pupils during breaks. The preparation of different vegetables is also taught.

All pupils of the village schools are involved in the project. This includes documenting the different seeds and planting progress, as well as growing seeds. The teachers were trained to teach the children organic farming. Special courses are held.

After the start-up financing, the project will be self-sustaining and will be continued permanently at the participating schools.
